Tonga establishes diplomatic ties with San Marino [1]

The Kingdom of Tonga formally established diplomatic relations with the Republic of San Marino on Tuesday, 25 February, in an official ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of San Marino to the United Nations in New York.
The Permanent Representative of Tonga to the United Nations, HE Viliami Va‘inga Tōnē, signed on behalf of Tonga, while the Permanent Representative of the Republic of San Marino, HE Damiano Beleffi, signed on behalf of the Government of the Republic of San Marino.
"The establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of San Marino is guided by the intention to strengthen the existing friendly relations between the respective Governments and peoples, and to expand the scope of cooperation in the political, economic, social and cultural fields," the Permanent Mission of Tonga to the United Nations stated.
The two UN Representatives also discussed possible areas of cooperation such as commercial links, tourism, visa and consular accessibility for citizens of both countries, and to explore opportunities in areas of mutual interest that would embody the two countries’ aspirations towards maintaining continued cordial relations.
San Marino is a microstate surrounded by Italy. It is the oldest representative republic and the European state with the second smallest population.
Located on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains, it is the fifth-smallest country in the world, with a land area of just over 61 km2 and a population of 33,642, as of 2023. It is among the 46 member States of the Council of Europe, member of the Eurozone but not of the European Union.
The country's economy is mainly based on finance, industry, services, retail, and tourism. It is one of the wealthiest countries in the world in terms of GDP (PPP) per capita, with a figure comparable to the most developed European regions. The country ranks 44th in the Human Development Index.
