67,000 Tongans registered to vote on April 24 [1]

About 67,000 Tongans have registered to vote in Tonga's 2008 General Election, the Electoral Officer Pita Vuki, said this morning.
Pita said that the registration of voters closed on March 31, when about 67,000 voters had been registered to vote in the April 24 Parliamentary Election.
He said that the number of voters has increased from 65,000 in 2005 to about 67,000 this year.
Tongatapu holds the majority with over 30,000 voters, followed by Vava'u with just over 10,000 voters, then the remaining 27,000 is divided between Ha'apai, 'Eua and the two Niuas.
The voters' roll is currently being printed and it should be published next week.
There are 71 candidates running in the election, which include 28 for Tongatapu, 22 for Vava'u, nine for Ha'apai, eight for 'Eua, and four from the remote islands of Niuatoputapu and Niuafo'ou.
Pita said that so far none of the registered candidate had been disqualified from running for election.
