Fineasi's future awaits the return of PM [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, March 6, 2008 - 19:11.  Updated on Thursday, June 12, 2014 - 21:36.

The Government Auditor-General's report on the alleged misuse of funds by the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Fineasi Funaki has been completed and handed over to the Prime Minister, Hon Dr Feleti Sevele.

The Deputy Secretary at the Prime Minister's office Paula Ma'u confirmed this afternoon that the Auditor General Dr Pohiva Tui'onetoa has indeed completed his investigation of the allegations against Hon. Fineasi Funaki.

Paula said the report is with the Prime Minister but what action will be taken next is yet to be confirmed.

The Auditor General's report was handed to the PM before he left for the Pacific Trade Expo in Auckland on Monday. He will return to Tonga tomorrow.

Allegations

The alleged misuse of funds by the Minister of Tourism was made in a letter of complaint by Ministry of Tourism's Chief Executive Officer, Edgar Cocker to the Prime Minister in early January.

It alleged the misuse of a $3,000 pa'anga, a cheque that was donated by the Chinese Embassy to help the ministry which hosted the Pacific Tourism Ministers meeting that was held in Nuku'alofa in October last year.

The Minister of Information Hon 'Afu'alo Matoto said last month that the investigation did not just deal with the $3,000 cheque but there were other matters alleged against the Minister which the investigation dealt with, and that was why it took a little longer.

Meanwhile new allegations has been revealed in the local media against the CEO Edgar Cocker, that he allocated works to his own private company, Cocker Enterprises, but so far no official complaints has been made against him.
