Tonga's Minister of Finance resigns [1]

Hon. Siosiua 'Utoikamanu.

Tonga's Minister of Finance, Hon. Siosiua 'Utoikamanu (52) resigned this afternoon.

Sitiveni Finau from the Ministry of Information today confirmed that the Minister had met King George Tupou V and had resigned.

No official reason was given for his resignation.

The Minister's impending resignation had been rumoured for months, giving rise to speculation about the future of the economic reform programme that he has been directing since 2002.

Hon. Siosiua 'Utoikamanu was appointed the Minister of Finance in 2001 and he was also the Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga from 1991 until 2003.
