Tofua volcano settles back to normal state [1]

Volcanic activities at Tofua Volcano have ceased in the last seven days. The Tofua Volcano is now considered safe for sailors to travel and navigate, the Volcano Watch Team of the Tonga Geological Services stated today, after satellite images on the thermal anomaly of Tofua showed that it remains at its normal state.
“The monitoring of Tofua Volcano will continue, however, this will be the last report for this Tofua Volcano watch period,” stated TGS this morning 23 May, 2024.
The service has been monitoring thermal activity at Tofua which commenced on 26 April. An ash cloud was observed being emitted from the volcano by HIMAWARI-9, rising to a height of 4km - 6km on 29 April. Continuous monitoring exhibited an unusual pattern with fluctuations in event frequency.
The service issued its last hazard warning to the public today.
“The volcanic activities at Tofua Volcano have ceased in the last 7 days. The satellite images on the thermal anomaly of Tofua [showed] that it remains at its normal state. All mariners are advised that Tofua Volcano is now considered safe for sailors to travel and navigate.
“There are no risks to the Vava’u and Ha'apai Communities.
“There are no risks to Airmen and the Aviation Community when flying near Tofua airspace.
Tofua is located 76.1 km west of Pangai, Ha’apai at Latitude & Longitude 19.75°S, 175.07°W.
