Solomon Islands won their second victory yesterday, 16 April, against Tonga in the OFC U-16 Championship Qualifying Stage at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku’alofa.
Their jaw-dropping 9-0 win against Tonga certified them a spot for the OFC Men’s Championship set for later this year in Tahiti.
The competition started off with a lot of pressure against the Tongan boys from Solomon Islands and their star player, Ashley Kwaimasia and captain Kennedy Sihiu.
Sihiu curled a shot from inside the 18-yard box into the back of the Tongan net, scoring Solomon Island’s first goal after just six minutes in to the match.
Solomon Islands’ Junior Sese and Kwaimasia scored an additional two goals, leading by 3-0 just before half time.
Starting off the second half, Solomon Islands found their rhythm early and, scored six more goals with the help of Kwaimasia who wiped the field with Tonga’s GK.
The Solomon Islands remain unbeaten and now only need a single point in their final clash against American Samoa on Friday 19 April, to secure their ticket to the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship in Tahiti in July.
