Tonga's U-16 football team won 3-0 against American Samoa, at the OFC qualifying stage that started at Teufavia Stadium in Nuku'alofa, on 13 April 2024.
Tonga started the match strong, stopping all of American Samoa's early attacks and, by first five minutes, co-captain Tevita Falepapalangi took advantage of a mistake made by the opposing goalie and scored their first goal.
Tonga kept pushing forward, but American Samoa's defense held strong, keeping the score 1-0 up until halftime.
Tonga's coach Timote Moleni, made some changes to their offense on the second half, which led the team to score again in the 60th minute with Tupou Havea.
Falepapalangi then set up Talaiasi Faluku for the third goal in the 69th minute.
With their first win, Tonga's U-16 team is excited for their next matches, hoping to keep winning and do well in the tournament.
Assistant coach Siosiua Mikaele said, “We have identified areas for improvement and will work hard to address them as we prepare for what promises to be a challenging encounter against the Solomon Islands next Tuesday.”
