Cocaine trafficker jailed after 12 years on the run [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, December 19, 2007 - 10:33.  Updated on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 - 16:41.

Highlights from Tonga's newspapers, December 10-13, 2007. An English translation summary by Tevita Fonua.

The Taimi on December 10 reports that Robin Muller, a Tongan, was sentenced in the US to a jail term of 151 months for cocaine trafficking. Released on bail in 1995, Robin bolted to Tonga but sensing that American investigators were on his trail, he fled to Samoa, then on to New Zealand, where his pursuers finally caught up with him, and where he fought unsuccessfully against extradition back to the United States.

The Kele'a on December 12 informed the Prime Minister's Office that not one hair was disturbed by the plethora of radio and television announcements regarding a lawsuit against the newspaper, for publishing what it observes to be the Prime Minister's and Deputy Prime Minister's exorbitant remunerations. Only preschoolers, says the Kele'a, are scared at the crack of thunder.

The Talaki on December 12 reports that three fishermen had abandoned their boat with its broken engine, and swum with their catch in chilly bins towards the islet of Hunga. Only one reached land and was rescued, the other two are still missing. The sole survivor admitted to having prayed constantly during his ordeal.

The Kalonikali on December 13 reports that the Minister of Police Siaosi 'Aho told a conference of the country's police commissioners that policing procedures need to be revised and updated.

The Taimi on December 13 reports that Vaka Pole'o and his talented children are very upset that a band, now based in America, is pirating some of their music, and even stocking stores with the Pole'o's latest releases. It is, according to Vaka, an abuse of his children's earnest labour.
