A team of New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel, accompanied by two Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) NH90 helicopters, has landed in Honiara to assist the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) as the nation gets ready to host the 17th Pacific Games.
The event is expected to draw around 5000 athletes, officials, and support staff, along with numerous visitors to the Solomon Islands from 19 November to 2 December.
NZDF stated that preparations for this significant sporting occasion prompted the Solomon Islands Government to seek security support, leading to collaboration with personnel from Australia, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea, in addition to the NZDF.
“With a history of cooperation, New Zealand and the Solomon Islands have a strong partnership, particularly in security matters. The NZDF, part of the Solomon Islands International Assistance Force (SIAF), has increased its presence to approximately 90 personnel during the Games to provide additional resources.”
Colonel Duncan George, task force deputy commander and senior national officer for the NZDF contingent, expressed enthusiasm for supporting the RSIPF in ensuring the safety and success of the Pacific Games.
“The Pacific Games is a big event on the sporting calendar and one many Pacific athletes aspire to compete in,” Colonel George said.
“Solomon Islands asked for assistance to help ensure the Games are safe, successful and enjoyed by everyone involved.
“We’re delighted to be here supporting our partners in Solomon Islands as they host this fantastic event.”
The NZDF, mainly comprising RNZAF personnel, will operate two NH90 helicopters to transport RSIPF members and personnel from Pacific partners involved in the Games. The deployment is scheduled for approximately three weeks, with a commitment to contributing to a secure and enjoyable event for all involved.
