A new ferry service for 'Eua was launched at the Taufa’ahau Tupou IV Domestic Wharf in the Port of Nuku'alofa today, 24 August after the MV Malau arrived from Korea earlier in the month.
The vessel was welcomed by the Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala, Crown Princess Sinaitakala Tuku'aho, government officials and locals
The 'Eua community helped to raise fund for the ferry, which reportedly cost over $6 million pa'anga.
The vessel was sailed to Tonga from Korea, by Captain Semisi Tangataevaha with Chief Officer Kulisi Tungalu, Second Officer Aisea Taukei'aho, engineers and crew - a voyage of over 8,000km, arriving on 8 August.
Tomorrow they will make their first official voyage to 'Eua.
A member of the Malau Committee said that the vessel will service the Nuku'alofa-'Eua route and help the social and economic development for the outer island of 'Eua.
The purchase of the vessel was funded through an international dinner that cost $10,000 pa'anga a table.
