Telecommunications specialists from the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces have partnered with His Majesty's Armed Forces, to install new communications systems in Tonga on 12 August.
The systems include high frequency radios, masts, batteries and solar arrays to improve communications across Nuku’alofa and the outer islands. The new communication systems are being installed at all HMAF bases and at the National Emergency Management Office - NEMO Tonga.
The project will also provide portable 'Manpack' high frequency radios along with a tailored training program. With the support of the Australian Army’s 1st Signals Regiment, HMAF will have gained an effective and resilient inter-island High Frequency capability.
Project Lali has been a key feature of the Tonga-Australia Defence Cooperation Program since 2013.
