About 6,000 mangroves seedlings were planted at Sopu, in Nuku'alofa, under the 1 Million Trees project of the Department of Environment and Climate Change and NGO Tonga Citizens Science Initiative.
Australian volunteers and AHC staff were joined by New Zealand, JICA and US counterparts to contribute to the project.
The mangroves will protect Tongan communities by lessening the impact of storms, tides and tsunamis. They will stabilize Tonga’s shores, prevent erosion, absorb carbon dioxide from the air and provide essential habitat for thousands of species.
‘Australia in Tonga’ reported that over 20,000 trees were planted within four days.
