Queen to open CHOGM on Friday [1]

HM Queen Elizabeth II arrives in Kampala.

THE Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM, will be officially opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in Kampala, Uganda, on Friday.

The Queen arrived in Kampala on November 21 for a three day state visit before opening the CHOGM on Friday, which will be attended by more than 50 Heads of State and government.

On Wednesday also the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers' Meeting was held at the Kampala Serena Hotel, chaired by the Uganda Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sam Kutesa. The meeting is a pre-cursor to the CHOGM and the discussions of the Foreign Affairs' Ministers set the agenda for CHOGM.

Tonga was represented at the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers' Meeting by the Tongan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, HE Dr Ngongo Kioa.

A part of the agenda, is the appointment of a new Secretary-General to take over from Rt. Hon. Don McKinnon at the end of this month. The two contenders for the post are the Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Mr Kamalesh Sharma and Maltese Foreign Minister, Dr Michael Frendo.

Tonga will be represented at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting by the Prime Minister Dr Feleti Vaka'uta Sevele. The Prime Minister is accompanied by his wife, 'Ainise and the Deputy Secretary to Cabinet Paula Ma'u.
