The Tonga Talas won their World Cup debut match when they beat the Fiji Pearls (56-51) on 28 July in Cape Town, South Africa.

While both teams defeated Zimbabwe in their respective meet ups, they both suffered bitter defeat to Australia. Tonga lost 84-38 while Fiji lost by 102-32.

Fox Sports stated that the Talas were impressive in the opening term and trailed by just two goals at the first change, leaving a “frustrated” Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich to rev up her side on the bench.

The speech worked, as the Diamonds went on a 10-goal run to open the second, forcing Tonga to bring Tuivaiti onto the court at goal shooter.
