FIFA President Mr Gianni Infantino met Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku in Nuku'alofa today to discuss FIFA’s strategies in Tonga - including a new $8 million stadium project.

They want to build academies for football here on Tongatapu and the outer islands as well as a new stadium project, which is expected to be completed June next year. The football facilities in Tonga may also be used as safety evacuation centres.

“Football is about equality and giving opportunities".

Infantino said Tonga is important to FIFA.

“Tonga is as big as Brazil, USA or China, for FIFA, and with the FIFA Women’s World Cup currently held in Oceania, it is important for Tonga to be part of that celebration.”

He also praised Tonga football regarding the forward program, a FIFA program for football development, piloted by Tonga.

“What is done in Tonga on the forward program is a state of art, and is made possible by the contribution from the government by provision of land. Also, Tonga football is very diligent in terms of the management of these projects.”

He said that football in both primary and secondary schools, was a initiative for children to participate in education. "Education is crucial. Children can be educated through the help of football which would benefit them in the future."

Healthier life

Prime Minister Hu'akavameiliku said, “Starting at primary and secondary schools is the best way to introduce football.”

"It will also help the government’s agenda for children to living healthier life, involving exercise with regard to football."

Another initiative by FIFA, the PM said is their invitation for women in Tonga's parliament to attend and watch the FIFA Women's world cup games.

Infantino’s visit to Tonga is part of his tour to members of the Oceania Football Confederation including Samoa and Tahiti.
