An assessment team for the Nationwide Early Warning System (NEWS) from Japan are in Nuku'alofa, led by Mr. Mashato Tamura.

The team was welcomed by Japan's Ambassador, HE Mr. Munenaga Kensaku at the Embassy of Japan on 7 July.

The NEWS assessment team are carrying out the final check-up of their project that was established earlier this year, which is crucial for Tonga's resilience against natural disasters, especially earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones.

Their assessment involves the outer islands, including the northern-most islands of Niuafo'ou and Niuatoputapu.
