Although Tonga lost to Samoa 1-3 in its second game at the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship on 24 June, they did not make it easy for their opponent.
Tonga’s only goal was scored by ‘Ana Fakavai.
OFC reported that Samoa eventually overcame a strong Tonga defensive display to register their first win.
The second-half goals saw Samoa secure victory over a dogged defensive display and outstanding goalkeeping from Tonga in Group A as they bid for a place in the knockout stages.
Samoa dominated the first-half from the on-set but could not find a way past the outstanding Madison Tenifa in the Tonga goal, who produced numerous fantastic saves to keep the score level.
Tonga got the consolation goal that their endeavour and commitment deserved with minutes remaining, when Fakavai scored.
Meanwhile, this is a crucial win for Samoa, as they seek to advance to the knockout stage, while Tonga will need to win their final match against New Caledonia on 27 June, to continue in Fiji.
