World Ocean Day 2023 was marked by an exhibition hosted by the Department of Environment in Nuku'alofa, today, 9 June.
The Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku as guest of honour said the theme 'Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing' is fitting.
“We recognise that Tonga is 99.9% ocean and 0.1% land and it is critical we understand the interconnectivity of our resources from the land to the high seas where the connection between ‘people, planet and profit’ systems underpin security and livelihoods, and therefore, sustainable development requires a paradigm shift from single sectoral to ecosystem policies and planning."
He said despite the ocean's immense importance, it faces a multitude of challenges.
"Pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change are threatening the health and vitality of our oceans. Plastic waste and debris choke marine life, while harmful chemicals and pollutants contaminate the waters. Irresponsible fishing practices deplete fish populations, and coral reefs, the rainforests of the sea, suffer from bleaching and destruction. Rising temperatures and ocean acidification pose further risks to marine ecosystems, exacerbating the already fragile state of our oceans.
“Today is not just a day of acknowledging the challenges; it is a day of action and hope. It is a day to recognise that every individual has the power to make a difference in the protection of our oceans. Whether through small actions like reducing single-use plastic, supporting sustainable seafood choices, or participating in beach cleanups, each step we take contributes to the collective effort of ocean conservation."
Tonga had made exemplary efforts to ensure we have achieved our 30 x 30 marine protected area target under SDG14, and 100% sustainably managed marine areas, said the PM.
The Department of Climate Change under MEIDECC also hosted students and displayed information booths promoting the reduction of plastic waste to protect our environment, at the Fa'onelua Convention Centre.
Guests included Minister of Health Hon. Dr Saia Piukala, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Fekitamoeloa 'Utoikumanu and others.
