Digital literacy and skills development is important for all Tongans, Hon Dr. Viliami Uasike Latu told a Digital Ministerial Conference in Seoul, South Korea.

He led the Tonga delegation to the Korea-Pacific Islands Digital Ministerial Conference on 31 May. They joined eight other Pacific Islands States.

Dr. Latu, the Minister for Trade and Economic Development, delivered two country statements on two different sessions, 'Building a safe and resilient digital ecosystem' and 'Promoting high quality and meaningful connectivity for all'.

“Tonga emphasised the importance of cybersecurity, equal access to digital opportunities, affordable connectivity, and responsible digital practices”, the Prime Minister's Office stated.

Tonga is making an effort to develop robust infrastructure and disaster recovery systems.

Tonga recognised the challenges in achieving universal connectivity, particularly in remote areas. The Minister emphasised the need for collaborative efforts, international cooperation, and innovative approaches. He also highlighted the importance of digital literacy and skills development for all Tongans.

The Korea-Pacific Islands Digital Ministerial Conference fosters cooperation and exchange of best practices in the digital sector, enabling Pacific Island nations to harness digital technologies for sustainable development.
