Chief Justice to sum up 16/11 group trial [1]

The trial of the first group of seven men charged with 16/11 related offences is drawing to an end at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court, with the Chief Justice to sum up the case tomorrow.

The jury trial, which began on October 10, heard 18 witnesses from the Crown and six witnesses called by Mana Kaufusi, who is representing five of the accused. 'Ofa Pouono, who represents two of the accused, did not call any witnesses.

During the trial the Crown called various eyewitnesses who testified in court that they saw the accused men commit the crimes alleged. Photographs and a DVD video were also shown in court of the accused present around the sites they are alleged to have damaged.

The counsel made their submissions on October 24 and ended today, with the Chief Justice Anthony Ford to sum up the case tomorrow before the seven jurors - all men - deliberate their verdict.

Riot, damage, housebreaking and arson

The seven men are charged with numberous offences including attending a riotous assembly at Pangai Si'i, housebreaking, arson, and the damaging of private and government properties.

They are 'Epeli 'Anitema of Nukuknuku, Kupufonua Folau of Mataika, Lafitani Tafolo of 'Anana, Laukau Pongia of Halaleva, Mapele Talatala of Nukunuku, Steven Tafolo of 'Anana, and 'Aisea 'Ali of Halaleva.

They are accused of destroying properties including, Molisi Tonga Supermarket, Chinese Shops at Kolomotu'a, and at Hala Lelue, the TCF Supermarket, and the Tungi Arcade Building. Properties that were partially damaged included the Prime Minister's Office and the Treasury.
