A joint Communiqué to formalize diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Rwanda was signed by the Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives of the Republic of Rwanda and the Kingdom of Tonga, HE Mr. Claver Gatete and HE Mr. Va’inga Tōnē on 21 March,

The establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries was held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Rwanda to the United Nations in New York.

The two Heads of Mission are nurturing the relations between Tonga and Rwanda, both at the bilateral and multilateral levels.

Ambassador Gatete said it was important to encourage the government-to-government and people-to-people relationships between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Rwanda.

The Permanent Representatives also discussed the success of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) which took place in 20-26 June 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda, attended by the Prime Minister, Hon. Huʻakavameiliku, and a delegation from the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga.
