The Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Hon Fekitamoeloa 'Utoikamanu to a ‘leaders meeting’ in Doha, Qatar.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) revealed that Hon. Hu’akavameiliku is amongst 46 other leaders at the meeting from the world’s least developed countries (LDCs).

“The United Nations said of the meeting that over five days of the LDC5 Conference in Doha, world leaders will gather with the private sector, civil society, parliamentarians, and young people to advance new ideas, raise new pledges of support, and spur delivery on agreed commitments, through the Doha Programme of Action.”

The leaders will discuss in the conference how each of their countries would benefit from social, economic and environmental development. They will also be joined by other parties like the civil society, private sector and young people to envision new ideas, pledges of support, and spur delivery on agreed commitments, through the Doha Programme of Action.

A Summit will be held a day before the conference and will be chaired by the President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera.

 A commemoration event will also be held on 5 March 2023 celebrating the 50^th anniversary of the establishment of the LDCs Group.

The website stated that “Since the onset of the pandemic, the 46 countries in the least developed category have suffered through inadequate pandemic-fighting resources and spiraling debt, sending their development progress backwards. At the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) on 5 to 9 March, these countries will gather with the rest of the international community to ensure their needs are placed back at the top of the global agenda.”
