Wednesday, February 22, 2023 - 22:22

A man was arrested after Tonga Police disrupted the illegal selling of liquor at a residence in Ngele’ia on Tongatapu over the weekend.

Police alleged that on Saturday night, 18 February police officers disrupted an illegal liquor sale from this residence, where they seized approximately over 500 cans and bottles of various alcoholic beverages.

The owner, a male individual, who is alleged to have been charged for selling liquor and running a business without the required licences, is expected to appear in court today.

No other details have been released at this stage.

“Tonga Police recognizes the increase of clandestine markets, mostly known as ‘Black Markets’ in Tonga, which operate mainly for the illegal sale of alcohol amongt other products, and urges the public to abstain from operating these illegal markets as they contribute to crime such as domestic violence, housebreaking and theft. In addition, lives have been lost unnecessarily on our roads due to drink driving,” the Police stated.
