Fotofili takes Ma'atu's seat in Tongan Legislature [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, April 8, 2004 - 09:41.  Updated on Saturday, May 3, 2014 - 18:55.

In a Tongan parliamentary By-election on April 7 the Noble Fotofili was elected as the new Noble's Representative of Niuatoputapu and Niua Fo'ou islands to the Tongan Legislative Assembly.

He takes the seat of Hon. Ma'atu who died on February 17.

There are only three nobles in the Niuas, Fusitu'a, Fotofili and Tangipa, and the nobles decide among themselves who will take the seat. The election ended in a tie, between Fotofili and Tangipa. The winner was going to be decided with a toss of a coin, but before the coin was tossed Tangipa surrendered and allowed Fotofili to take the seat. Noble Fotofili is the son of the late Kalaniuvalu Fotofili and Princess Mele Siu'ilikutapu.

The General Parliamentary Election for Tonga will take place early in 2005.
