The annual Tonga Police operation for the Christmas and New Year holidays started on 22 Decemberand will run to 4 January, 2023 aimed to prevent crimes and ensure public safety.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Tevita Vailea said today that 324 police officers have been assigned throughout Tonga.
The operation is aimed to reinforce effective police service and ensure everyone are safe during this busy celebratory season.
He said the operation will see police visibility strengthened with round-the-clock police on the beat, regular police patrols to key target areas, including beaches and public gatherings, removal of drunks from public places, and holding liquor licenses to account, when licence conditions are breached.
At the same time, Police will continue to target drug dealers and other crimes.
He reiterated the importance of road safety, especially with road fatalities spiking to 14 so far for the year.
“Road safety measures will be implemented through planned spot checks in strategic locations to prevent further crashes on our roads, due to drunk driving and speed. I also urge parents to make sure their children are safe and know their whereabouts during the holidays,” said the Deputy Commissioner.
