Ports Authority scares the Chamber [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, September 21, 2007 - 20:11.  Updated on Sunday, June 15, 2014 - 19:56.

The Chamber recently held an emergency meeting to discuss amongst other things, the large rate hikes by the Tongan Ports Authority.

With all charges from a monopoly type authority that will have significant impact on goods entering the country it is crucial that consultations be held with stakeholders to discuss impending charges. The consultations are essential to ensure that charges are applied in a transparent manner and that the charges are justified ...– as we understand it no consultations were held.

At this stage the charges will apply immediately ...– some shippers such as Reef will not apply these charges till their next sailing in October but as we understand it the rates have kicked in already.

We understand that the Shipping Association and TEFA have already started putting their concerns down and have asked for the Chamber to look into this matter. As these large rate increases will have a direct impact on not only our businesses but everything coming across the wharf this is a major area of concern for the Chamber and we will work closely with those who have taken the lead on approaching the concerned authorities to seek a way forward that is fair for all. - Tonga Chamber of Commerce.
