More than 80 teachers graduated from the government’s Tonga Institute of Education on 13 December in Nuku'alofa, with various qualifications to work in secondary, primary and early childhood teaching.
The Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku made the presentations and congratulated graduates on their academic achievements, to a full house of happy families and friends, at Queen Salote Memorial Hall.
Four women achieved their Bachelors of Education in Tonga Early Childhood Teaching.
Forty two received a Diploma of Education in Secondary Teaching; 35 received a Diploma of Education in Primary Teaching.
The Prime Minister said this was a very defining moment for them, a day of celebration, a day to look back at the many challenges they overcame and to look forward to what lies ahead, knowing they have the skills and knowledge to meet the challenge.
“A good education system can change lives, make it possible to adapt, grow and do what you would have thought was unimaginable.
"The opportunity to pursue higher education rarely comes without a cost to those supporting you, whether it be financial or sacrificing time or delegation of responsibility to allow you, as a learner, to focus on your studies. Similarly, none of us would be here today if it was not for the management and staff at the institute, you too should feel very proud today."
“The importance of education as a whole to the future of Tonga can't hardly be overstated and its importance for the future of our young generation.
“This is a historical event as it is the last ceremony under the Ministry of Education, as next year the institute will be under the new Tonga National University”, said the Prime Minister.
