The Australian Ambassador for Women and Girls, Christine Clarke CSC is making her first visit Tonga this week, after taking up the position in January.
Australian High Commissioner, HE Rachael Moore said they are delighted to have the Ambassador for Women and Girls in Tonga to highlight some of the great programs they deliver.
On 21 November, Ambassador Clarke met Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala, during a reception on board the HMAS Leeuwin at Vuna wharf.
She will also meet a range of stakeholders in the public and private sector to discuss shared priorities for progressing gender equality and women’s empowerment.
This includes women leaders in business and civil society, and partners implementing key programs that address key issues such as women’s leadership and representation and gender-based violence, stated the Australian High Commission.
On 22 November, Ambassador Clarke met with the Balance of Power Country Manager, Tupou Fakakovikaetau, who led an informative talanoa on women's leadership in Tonga, alongside long time activists for gender equality, Betty Blake and Lepolo Taunisila.
Ambassador Clarke took the opportunity to reiterate Australia's commitment to gender equality and women's leadership and thanked the guests for the work they do to lead on these efforts.
In addition, she opened Talitha Project's new office building and training space in a five-year program, under the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) in partnership with CARE Australia.
There she met Talitha's adolescent mentors undergoing the My Body! My Rights! program, an initiative supported by Australia through the regional Pacific Girl program that aims to empower young girls through awareness and confidence-building.
