Twenty Tongan women joined a gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) Harvesting and Post-Harvesting training session, to improve the watermelon export pathway to support women in the agriculture sector in Nuku'alofa, on 17 November.
The women participants have significant roles in the agriculture sector from farming to marketing, exporting, public extensions and policy services, stated the Australian High Commission in Nuku'alofa.
The training aimed to help participants in the agriculture sectors, gain access for products into new markets, and assist with maintaining and improving existing agricultural exporting of watermelon and other fresh exports to Australia and New Zealand. It builds on ongoing activities implemented by the Tonga watermelon taskforce, to improve the quality of watermelon exports overseas.
GEDSI, under the agriculture value chain, works together with PHAMA Plus to address gender inequalities and support the empowerment of women, youths and people living with disabilities in agriculture.
