By-Election for Tongatapu 8 in January 2023 [1]

The By-Election to elect the new People's Representative to the Tonga Legislative Assembly for the Tongatapu 8 constituency will be held on Thursday, 19 January, 2023.
This is to fill the seat vacated by the late Hon. Semisi Fakahau (74) who passed away in Tongatapu, on 26 October. He was also the Minister of Fisheries.
The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Fakafanua issued to the Electoral Commission the writ of election for this by-election, on 11 November.
Parliament stated the by-election was confirmed, after consultation between the Speaker of Parliament and the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, the Rt. Hon. Lord Dalgety K.C, as required by the Legislative Assembly Act.
At the same time, the writs of election informing the results of the by-elections held for Tongatapu 4, Tongatapu 6, and Tongatapu 7 on 3 November were also returned to the Speaker.
The three new elected Members of Parliament are Mateni Tapueluelu for Tongatapu 4, Dulcie Elaine Tei for Tongatapu 6, and Paula Piveni Piukala for Tongatapu 7.
They will take their oaths as representatives, at the next meeting of Parliament on a date to be notified, as required by clause 83 of the Constitution.
