Teachers from throughout Tongatapu marched in a parade for World Teachers' Day in the Central Business District of Nuku'alofa on, 21 October, as part of a special program of activities.

Many joined the parade with secondary school brass bands, going to Queen Salote Memorial Hall, where the program was attended by teachers from various school systems and families.

World Teachers' Day is marked on 5 October but this event in Nuku'alofa was held with the Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training, on his return to Tonga, after attending overseas meetings.

Hon. Hu’akavameiliku said this year's theme ‘Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers.'

He said when students are in fear and in doubt, teachers are their driving force, standing by them with encouragement to continue excelling in their paths.

“The same goes to you teachers, when you find yourself in times of worry and fear, remember that we are here to stand by you and to encourage you in our work."

He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the dedicated teachers who were no longer with us and had recently passed, acknowledging their service to the country.

He conveyed his best wishes to all the teachers in both the government and church based schools in Tonga.
