The local tourism industry that was hit hard with the closure of Tonga's international borders in 2020 is looking for revival. The first cruise ship Paul Gauguin, is scheduled to arrive on 3 October in Nuku'alofa, with another two to follow in October.
The Ministry of Tourism stated today this is the first of eight cruise ships listed to visit Tonga this year.
However, at this stage, only three cruise ships to arrive on 3 October, 12 October and 14 October had been confirmed by their agents. The rest have not been confirmed.
Paul Gauguin is expected to bring a total of 511 passengers and crew members from the Cook Islands. Most of the passengers are Americans.
The local tourism industry was hit hard when borders closed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Two-years six-months on, Tonga finally lifted most of its health requirements, effective on 27 September, resulting in full border re-opening for both air and sea arrivals.
The only health requirement mandatory now is proof of vaccination for foreigners age 12 and above before entry.
