‘Etuate Lavulavu, the Founder and Director of the 'Unuaki 'o Tonga Royal University is suing the Tonga Broadcasting Commission for defamation.

He is claiming that a Radio Tonga article headlined "Dr Wang has nothing to do with 'Unuaki 'o Tonga University" that ran on August 22 is false and defamatory. 'Etuate refuted allegations contained in the article by former News Editor Siaosi Lavaka.

'Etuate is claiming that the allegation that the university is a fraud and should be brought to the notice of the Tonga Government, was and is false.

'Etuate is also claiming that Dr Wang was in fact an executive Director to the Asian Region of the 'Unuaki 'o Tonga Royal University and has been a member of the Board of Trustees since August 2004, a position he has not resigned from.

'Etuate also claimed he had never received a letter from Dr Wang disassociating himself from the school, nor any letter regarding the unlawful taking of building materials and cement from Dr Wang's hotel for the school as claimed.

As a former parliamentarian and a prospective candidate for the 2008 parliamentary election, 'Etuate is claiming that the article damaged his reputation, and in his statement of claim on August 29, is seeking a court's judgement of $200,000 from the defendant TBC.

Meanwhile, the well-known radio personality Sioasi Lavaka, who was dismissed by TBC on August 23 over the same news article, is challenging his dismissal, and is seeking his right of reply and to be paid for his overtime work and outstanding leave hours.
