COVID-19 cases slowly decreasing, but public urged to be vigilant [1]

The number of COVID-19 active cases, which saw a second wave peaking last month, is on a downward trend in Tonga.
The COVID-19 variant BA.5 has been confirmed in Tonga, after the re-opening of its borders on 1 August.
The Ministry of Health in its latest figures published on 31 August, 2022, reported 69 new cases and 512 active cases.
Of the 512 active cases, a majority are in Tongatapu (383), Vava’u 54, Ha’apai 32, ‘Eua 11, Niuafo’ou 32 and Niuatoputapu 0.
The COVID cases peaked last month, with over 200 new cases daily. The cases have since 25 August been decreasing.
Meanwhile, the number of deaths among COVID-19 cases in Tonga remains at 12.
The Health Ministry urged the public to keep to the health measures required, under the orange level that Tonga is currently in.
