A 20-year-old woman died on the morning of 1 September, after crashing her Toyota Rav-4 on ‘Alaivahamama’o By-Pass Road at Halaleva, in Nuku'alofa.
The Commander of the Tongatapu Districts, Chief Superintendent Filipe Fifita said that the crash occurred at around 2:42am, yesterday.
The young woman from Pahu was driving alone in her silver Toyota Rav-4 heading east.
“The car swerved to the side of the road and crashed onto a block fence before hitting an electric pole resulting in her tragic death.
"Speed and driving under the influence contributed to this fatal incident," he alleged.
The Chief Superintendent urged youth drivers and road users to act responsibly because there is only one life.
"You should always take responsibility for your safety first and foremost. Make sure you do not drink and drive. Arrange for a sober driver or catch a taxi home if you decide to consume alcohol."
Tonga Police reminded the public to comply with the Restrictions Directions, especially with the night-time curfew, which has now been reduced to four hours from 1:00am- 5:00am.
“Please, let us work together to keep the law and maintain safety on our roads,” said Chief Superintendent Fifita.
This is the latest road fatality, after three road deaths last weekend. The total number of road fatalities now stands at eight.
