120 runners in Tonga Animal Welfare Society marathon [1]

Over 120 runners took part in a fun marathon hosted by the Tonga Animal Welfare Society on Saturday, 27 August, to raise funds to assist its work in increasing awareness and provision of medical care for animals.
TAWS stated yesterday that the race from Lapaha to the Ha’amonga trilithon at Niutoua, on eastern Tongatapu was a great success. Over $5,000 pa'anga was raised from raffles and athlete entries.
TAWS President Salesi Fineanganofo announced the winners and thanked all those who participated, including volunteers. There were several divisions:
Corporate Relay Event: winner, Group 1 of the Tonga Police recruits.
Main 42km event: winners, 1. Nik Kar, 2.Gary Dannahar, 3. Maree Bright.
21km event: winners, Andrew Piper, 2. Kentaro Oishi, 3. Dave Verkade.
10km event: winners, 1. Sheena Naik, 2. HE Lucy Joyce.
A 5km event included a plogging event where participants walked and picked up rubbish along the way, sponsored by Waste Authority Ltd.
Sponsors included Digicel Tonga, Tonga Health , Waste Authority Limited, Tonga Police, Tonga Red Cross, Waterfront Lodge and Restaurant, Young's Kitchen, Kids Hub Cafe, Koko Soaps, Digicel Tonga and Cowley & Sons.
This is TAWS' second marathon event.
Earlier, on Friday, 26 August, to mark International Dog Day, TAWS held a pop-up puppy clinic and offered parvo virus vaccines, donated by Australia through the DAPP grant applications.
A team from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forest Tokomololo clinic worked alongside TAWS volunteers to vaccinate 82 puppies against parvo virus and provide flea tick and worm treatments to over 100 puppies, at Digicel Square.
The parvo vaccines will continue to be free until these run out and are available at MAFF Tokomololo clinic.
This is part of the mission of Tonga Animal Welfare Society to provide necessary care for animals in Tonga and to increase awareness and education surrounding animal welfare practices.
The event was opened by H.E Rachel Moore, Australian High Commissioner attended by ‘Ana Pifeleti CEO of MAFF Livestock division and others.
