Two men face prison sentences for marijuana possession [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, August 27, 2007 - 18:41.  Updated on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 - 14:18.

A sentence of imprisonment is inevitable a judge told two young men who were convicted at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court today on a charge of possessing marijuana.

Sonatane Mahe (20) of Kolomotu'a and Tevita Taiala (27) of Houmakelikao were found guilty by Justice Warwick Andrew and remanded in police custody until September 24 for sentencing.

Mahe was found guilty for possessing three plastic bags containing 864 cannabis seeds.

Taiala was also found guilty for the possession of cannabis plants and one plastic bag containing 42 grams of marijuana.

The police found the two accused in possession of the illicit drug on July 28, 2006 when they raided a home at Kolomotu'a.

A third accused, Filokivalu Tu'itavake of Kolomotu'a who was also charged with possession of marijuana was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Mr Justice Andrew told the court that because this is a serious offence a sentencing of imprisonment is inevitable.

The two accused had no previous convictions and both men were represented by Siosifa Tu'utafaiva with 'Aminiasi Kefu as Crown Prosecutor.
