Tonga Police believe that two separate brawls involving students in Nuku'alofa last Friday were, in some cases, instigated by youths who are no longer in school and that alcohol was a contributing factor.
On Friday, 12 August Police received reports of two separate brawls.
Commander of Tongatapu Districts, Chief Superintendent Filipe Fifita said the Police does not tolerate any of this unacceptable behaviour, it is a public concern and a disturbance to community peace and safety.
“It appears that alcohol may be a contributing factor to some of these fights committed or instigated by youths who are not in school.
“Youths and students should always think twice. It costs nothing to be nice or be an instrument of peace. Brawls on the other hand, not only are a direct violation of the law likely to result in police arrest, but also, they need to consider the negative record against their character, and potential injury and life threats."
He said that Tonga Police aims to revitalise close collaboration with school principals and prefects to return the Police-Prefects after school patrols, coupled with increased police presence at targeted areas.
Parents and guardians are urged to also play their role in making sure that their children are not involved in such mindless actions and conduct, said the Chief Superintendent.
