Inquest rules suicide in police cell death [1]

An inquest has ruled that the death of a 69-year-old man in a cell at the Mu'a Police station was a suicide. 

Deputy Commissioner of Police Tevita Vailea said today that the inquest was held on 7 July.

“From the evidence presented, the inquest was satisfied and concluded that the death was indeed a suicide,” he said.

Police had initially reported that the man was overly intoxicated, when arrested and detained by Police during the evening on Sunday, 3 July

He was found dead in the police cell on the morning of 4 July in circumstances indicating suicide. 

Investigators from the Tonga Police Professional Standards Unit had also investigated the death.
