Offender jailed for attempted rape [1]

A 69-year-old man was sentenced to five-years imprisonment for attempted rape of a 20-year-old woman on Tongatapu in 2021.
 
Hon. Mr Justice Cooper sentenced him on three counts of one attempted rape and two of serious indecent assault. He was convicted after a trial last month, at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.
 
He also issued an order under section 119 that no detail may be published that could lead to the identification of the complainant.
 
The offence occurred on the night of 2 March, 2021.

"The defendant is not young and has not cooperated with the authorities and shows no remorse. But I have in mind the need and chance for rehabilitation and the importance of this issue."

The judge in sentencing him to five-years imprisonment. The last 12-months were suspended for two-years on conditions.
