Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, May 10, 2022 - 06:51

A third Member of Parliament, Tatafu Moeaki will be unseated from the Legislative Assembly on 16 May. This was after the Speaker received the Supreme Court's certification that his election is void on Friday, 6 May.

Parliament said today, that the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Fakafanua, received the Certification confirming Moeaki's election as Tongatapu People's Representative Tongatapu 4 void, in the outcome of a judgement in an election petition for bribery.

He will be unseated together with two other People's Representatives on 16 May.

The others are Tongatapu 10, Pohiva Tuʻiʻonetoa and Tongatapu 7, Sione Sangster Saulala, whose elections had earlier been voided by the Supreme Court.

Once unseated, their seats will become vacant and the Speaker will then issue the writ for election of new Representatives for these contituencies.

However, the date for the election of the new Representatives will be determined by the Electoral Commission in consultation with the Speaker.

Meanwhile, three election petitions remain pending at the Supreme Court in Nuku’alofa.
