There are currently 1,217 active COVID-19 cases recorded in Tonga as at 2 May, with the majority (702) located on Tongatapu.

Vava’u has 431 active cases, Ha’apai has 84, while ‘Eua and the two Niuas have no cases.

There were 42 new cases recorded yesterday, May 2, a significant drop from the 132 recorded the day prior (May 1).

According to the Ministry of Health, 9,255 people have recovered from the virus, and the number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains at 11.

Meanwhile, vaccination programs are underway. At least 98% of the target population over the age of 12 have had first doses, 91% have had second doses, and 56% have received booster shots.

Around 25% of children aged 5 to 11 have received their first doses so far.

Restrictions continue

Tonga is still under the orange lockdown level restriction up to May 7 with businesses currently allowed to operate from Monday to Saturday and restaurants allowed to have customers dine-in under COVID-19 protocols.

Bars and kava drinking clubs remain closed as well as schools.

The night-time curfew is from 10:00pm to 5:00am.

Government is expected to announce later this week what level restrictions the country will be under starting from May 7.
