I will visit Nauru and Tonga from 15 to 17 July. I look forward to furthering Australia's close relationship with these Pacific neighbours, and to exchanging views on political and economic reform developments in both countries, and on regional and international issues of mutual interest and concern. I will take the opportunity to welcome the ongoing contribution of both countries to the regional consensus on Fiji and to the important work of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).

In Nauru, I will meet with President Scotty, Foreign Minister Adeang and senior ministers to discuss the significant steps the Nauru Government has taken to improve governance and economic management. These steps, and the further reforms that are envisaged, will enhance Nauru's economic prospects. I look forward to signing the fifth Memorandum of Understanding between Australia and Nauru, which will provide a framework for our continued cooperation on combating people smuggling, and for Australian development cooperation in support of Nauru's reform priorities. During my visit, I will meet the Australians deployed to Nauru who are there to help implement the Nauru Government's ambitious economic and governance reform agenda. I will also visit the offshore processing centre. In Tonga, I will have the opportunity to hold discussions with His Majesty King George V, Prime Minister Sevele and senior ministers on progress with reconstruction following the riots of November 2006. I also look forward to exchanging views on prospects for the Tongan economy and hearing more about the Government of Tonga's thinking on political reform, following the welcome establishment of a tripartite committee to consider reform options. I will seek an update on Tonga's plans to open a diplomatic mission in Canberra, a proposal which Australia warmly welcomes. I will reconfirm Australia's readiness to provide assistance, in cooperation with New Zealand, to strengthen the Tongan Police Force. I will also discuss issues of relevance to the Pacific Islands Forum meeting which Tonga will host in October 2007. Alexander Downer, 14/07/07.
