Seven thousand doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines funded by Japan through COVAX, arrived in Tonga yesterday, February 15.
Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Kensaku Munenaga, received the vaccines at Fua’amotu International Airport.
He said this additional provision of the AZ vaccines will enable Tonga to achieve their national target of vaccination, that is 70% of the total population fully vaccinated.
“Japan is greatly pleased to be able to contribute to their achievement.”
This is the third batch of Japan made AstraZeneca vaccines provided to Tonga following the donation of 26,800 doses in August 2021 and 7,000 doses in December 2021. Vehicles were also provided for transportation.
In addition to supporting Tonga's COVID-19 efforts, Japan is assisting with Tonga's recovery efforts from the volcanic eruption and tsunamis.
