Three new positive COVID-19 cases have been confirmed for Tonga today, February 2 bringing the number to five in total.

Prime Minister Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni said this afternoon that the new cases are connected to one of the two positive COVID-19 cases that tested positive last night Tuesday, February 1.

He told a media conference the rest of the tests carried out last night were negative.

“The five have been transported for quarantine at Mu’a Health because COVID-19 symptoms like fever have started to appear in some,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health Hon. Dr Saia Piukala said that the three new positive cases included a spouse (29) and their two children aged 4 and 3 years.

This was the result of tracing by health officials of the first two positive cases close contacts.

The three were among 36 cases that were tested for COVID-19 last night, February 1.

He said health officials this morning also carried out tests for workers at the port but their results had not been confirmed since there were a lot of them.

“The highest priority now is the close contacts of these positive cases and whom they interacted with since Saturday, January 29,” he said.

The Health Ministry announced through various media the places and times where the two positive cases had visited since Saturday to date.

The Minister asked people if they were in these areas to self-isolate at home. They should contact 0800019 or 0800935 and health officials will come and get them tested.

Tonga's lockdown begins at 6:00pm local time.

Following the severing of Tonga's fibre optic cable in the Jan. 15 Hunga Tonga eruption and tsunamis, Matangi Tonga has no internet access in the office so this might be our last posted report for a while, until we can find some more internet access.

Most Tongans will have no internet connectivity at home during this first COVID-19 lockdown to prevent COVID-19 transmission.

Tongans in the capital have been frantically rushing around today to get supplies before the 6:00pm lockdown comes into effect.
