TONGA'S Miss Galaxy Queen Beauty Pageant for 2007 lived up to its reputation as an outrageous and fun-packed fashion show, kicking off a three nights event at Nuku'alofa's Queen Salote Memorial Hall last night, July 4.
The Miss Galaxy Pageant has become a famous fixture on the Tonga festival calendar because the contestants are fakaleitis, young men who are dressing up as women. Flaunting names like 'Sweet Leilani,' they model their own bizarre, fantastic, and grotesque creations, their well-built shoulders supporting fantastic fairy wings. Balancing on high heels they show off well-muscled legs, while flirting with the audience. Miss Galaxy is a show that attracts an eclectic mix - mum, dad and the kids, and tourists along with the fans and a handful of dedicated followers.
Making a first appearance last night the nine contestants were judged in two categories, their Own Creation and International Wear. The Misses wowed the audience with colourful costumes made from straws, banana leaves, even paper.
Tonight July 5, the contestants will be judged on the second event - the Hat Creation and Talent.
The final night will be on Friday July 6 when the contestants will be judged on the final three categories, the Evening Gown, Galaxy Wear and Interview before the Miss Galaxy for 2007-08 is crowned.
