A ground-breaking ceremony for the establishment of the second temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tonga was held at Neiafu, Vava’u on Saturday 11 September 2021.
HM King Tupou VI and HM Queen Nansipau’u performed the ceremony. A display showed the design drawings of the Neiafu temple to be built next to the LDS Saineha High School, at Masilamea.
The new temple will be the second for the Church of the Later-day Saints; the first was built in Tongatapu 40 years ago. The first LDS missionaries arrived in Tonga in 1891.
Also attending the ceremony were Lord Fakafanua, and the Prime Minister Hon. Rev. Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa.
