Tonga's Ha'apai Group of islands has received delivery of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine funded by Japan and provided by COVAX.
Japanese Ambssador HE Mr Kensaku Munenaga was present at the Maama 'o Mamani Hall in Pangai for the launch of the vaccine roll-out by Hon Frederica Tuita Filipe, on August 31. He hoped that the vaccines would protect the lives of Tongan people.
Japan provided 36,800 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to Tonga via COVAX, and the Ministry of Health decided based on its plan to provide about 4000 doses as the first roll out to Ha’apai, he said.
“While our Kingdom is sill COVID-free, we should vaccinate all the population over 18-years old as soon as possible. I believe that the Ministry of Health will keep achieving smooth and efficient inoculations based on its good management of the vaccines.”
At the same time, CEO for Public Health Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa extended their most sincere appreciation to Japan for their kind generosity and donation, which was a result of bilateral discussions between Japan and Tonga's Prime Ministers.
He said these vaccines will benefit not only the people on Ha'apai but Tongatapu and the rest of the islands, he said. "We can feel the warmth of your love."
The Ha'apai Governor Hon Viliami Hingano also received his vaccination shot.
