‘Ikale Tahi Head Coach, Toutai Kefu is reported to be out of surgery and is expected to live, after being seriously injured in a home invasion early this morning, August 16.
In an ABC report this afternoon, Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said Toutai’s initial condition was described as critical, but expected to survive.
Toutai was stabbed while trying to defend his family, who were also injured and taken to hospital.
Police found a knife, axe and believe a machete was also used in the attack, which they believe was not targeted.
"It is highly likely a burglary that has gone wrong.”
“Meanwhile, his wife has suffered very, very serious lacerations to her arm and I'm told her wounds are very significant.”
The children, his 21-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter were also injured.
Their son had sustained significant wounds to his arm and back and one of his daughters has cuts to her hand and arm.
Teenagers arrested
Two 15-year-old boys, one from Goodna and the other from Springfield Lakes, have been taken into custody.
One (armed with a knife) was caught by neighbours who went to help the Kefus, while another was arrested at the hospital after presenting himself with cuts.
Police are looking for a third person, who they believe was involved.
A stolen car was used by the offenders to travel to the scene.
Meanwhile, on social media, Tonga Rugby Union said they were shocked to hear of the assault on Toutai Kefu and family.
“Prayers go out to the family.”
