Tonga's Head Coach for the 'Ikale Tahi, Toutai Kefu, is in hospital in Brisbane, reportedly “fighting for his life” after being stabbed in a home invasion, early this morning Monday August 16.
According to Australia’s Channel 7 News the 47-year-old is in a serious condition at Princess Alexandra Hospital, with abdominal wounds. They said Toutai was stabbed in the stomach after the family confronted the men who broke into the family home at Coorparoo at around 3:00am Monday morning. He was stabbed while trying to defend his family, who were also injured and taken to hospital.
His wife suffered a significant arm injury, while his son sustained lacerations to his back and abdominals. His daughter sustained a hand injury.
Neigbours who rushed to the scene had held one of the alleged offenders who was arrested at the scene. The Courier-Mail reported that two men were in police custody.
Just last month, Kefu coached Tonga's national rugby union team, the 'Ikale Tahi against New Zealand's All Blacks, Samoa and Cook Islands during the Rugby Union World Cup Qualifier.
A Wallabies legend, Kefu has earned 60 caps over a seven-year career.
He had also made more than 100 appearances for the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby and had a short play in Japan, before taking up coaching.
